'paying attention in a particular way,
on purpose, in the present moment,
and nonjudgmentally.' (Jon Kabat-Zinn)
To pay attention on purpose means to direct your attention meaningfully, not just willy-nilly, but actively shaping your experience and mind.
Bringing your attention to the present moment means refusing to overindulge in adverse mental events - such as worry, depression, or anger - while feeling each moment as it happens now.
Nonjudgmental attention refers to leaving your judgements of what is happening right now, at the door. 'Nonjudgmental' is the contemporary term for 'Acceptance'. While you may experience anger, fear, or resentment for example in the present moment, refrain from criticising yourself for having such emotions. Recognise and accept pleasant and unpleasant experiences as they arise in mindfulness.
